Real Estate Continuing Education Requirements
Licensees holding either a Real Estate Salesperson’s or a Broker/Broker-Salesperson’s license in New Jersey are required to earn continuing education (CE) credit from accredited CE providers every two years. The licensing period for all licensees runs from July 1 of odd-numbered years (i.e. 2015, 2017) through June 30 of the year two years later. During that time period* licensees must have proof of having taken:
EITHER 12 hours of CE classes that are ALL designated as “Ethics,” OR
12 hours of CE classes that include:
- At least 6 hours of “Core” credits, of which at least 2 hours must be in “Ethics”
- 6 hours in the “Electives” or “Core” categories, or a combination of the two.
However, although the licensing period technically permits licensees to obtain the requisite CE credits up to June 30th of their license renewal year (odd-numbered year), if they do not have their 12 hours of CE credits as noted above reported to the Real Estate Commission by April 30th of the renewal year, the Commission will impose a $200 penalty for late reporting. As the NJ Real Estate Commission website states: “It will take approximately 10 business days for the confirmation of your completed continuing education to be transferred from your CE Provider to the testing vendor to the Real Estate Commission.”
