Your Path to Becoming a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson in NJ and PA Starts Here!

Here are the requirements for obtaining a New Jersey or Pennsylvania “Salesperson” real estate license.

New Jersey

  • At least 18 when you apply for your license (you can be start real estate school at age 17)
  • A high school diploma or the equivalent
  • Be legally allowed to live and work in the United States
  • Complete a licensed real estate school’s 75-hour course
  • Pass the state exam with a score of at least 70%
  • Undergo a criminal history background check
  • Complete all the above and join a brokerage firm within one year of graduating from the real estate pre-licensing course.

Already-Licensed Real Estate Professionals

Pennsylvania

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Provide proof of high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be a U.S. resident
  • Have completed 4 credits or 75 hours of real estate education (effective 8/28/18) in Real Estate Fundamentals and Real Estate Practice within 5 years prior to passing the licensing examination
  • Optional—possess a bachelor’s degree with a major in real estate or the equivalent from an accredited college, university, or institute of higher learning
  • Optional—have completed four credits for 75 hours of acceptable, basic real estate courses at a real estate school, accredited college, university, or institute of higher learning located outside the commonwealth that has been approved by the jurisdiction where the school is located.   • Have successfully passed both the state and national exam
  • Provide a background check

If you hold a salesperson license in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Georgia, Louisiana or Arkansas, you may qualify for a Pennsylvania “Reciprocal” license. Contact the Pennsylvania Real Estate Commission for details.
